In the fall of 2011, the New York School of Interior Design library received a large donation of books from the estate of H. Parkin Saunders upon his passing.
The gift contained books on interiors, gardens, design history, and other great topics. The library has been able to add 150 books to the collection due to this generous gift.

An Arkansas native and a New York School of Interior Design alumni, Saunders began his design career apprenticing under one of America’s best-known decorators, Mario Buatta. “In 1985, Parkin founded the firm Saunders & Walsh with his late-partner, Christopher Walsh, and in 1996 formed his New York-based design firm, H. Parkin Saunders, Inc.”

Influenced by his Southern upbringing, Parkin Saunders built his business on relaxed, well-chosen, and sophisticated designs. Saunders’ style was solidly traditional, using English and French antiques of neutral tones to create a dramatic yet peaceful effect. He liked to work in layers, creating designs uniquely suited to each client’s lifestyle. He often studied every detail, including what kind of soap would be placed in the soap trays, and even had the client’s favorite food for presentation on the night they moved in.

Saunders was extremely passionate about art and design, and we honor his achievements and contributions to interior design with a display of a portion of the books he donated to our collection. Come to the library to check them out!

We recently received some great samples for the Graduate Center and information when Erin Weatherstone, the representative from Unika Vaev, visited!

One line, Life Textiles – Mammoth, is a 100% wool fabric from humanely sheered free-range sheep. It meets all commercial ACT standards. It prices out at $140/yd. The dye process does recycle water, but natural dyes are not used because they currently lack the color fastness needed in a commercial setting. Click here for more information.

Another new line is Light. It is a Polyurethane that is breathable, a water barrier, and anti-microbial. Great news for those who don’t like to stick to upholstery in areas that require a water barrier.

3 new dot and stripe lines are woven locally in New Jersey and we will be receiving samples when they are available.

Another tidbit Erin shared was that ACT, Association for Contract Textiles, has launched a sustainability guide for textiles used in commercial interiors. Read more about ACT Standards at http://www.contracttextiles.org/

Good luck with finals!

Each year the graduating class gives a parting gift to the New York School of Interior Design. This year the Class of 2011 decided the library would benefit from the class gift, and library staff were thrilled.

With the money the graduating class raised, we’ve purchased a collection of almost 50 books, focusing on various building types. The recent graduates know just how important books on these subjects are for thesis research and Contract III among others, and books on healthcare design, museum design, and retail and office design were among those purchased.

These are excellent books, with plans and case studies galore – there are even a couple ebooks. Each book purchased with funds from the class gift has a letterpress printed bookplate inside the front cover, so when you see it, you can thank the Class of 2011.

A full list of the books is below:

This weekend, October 15 & 16, 2011, is the 9th annual Open House New York Weekend, where locations around New York will open their doors for free tours. I’ve been attending OHNY since the very 1st year, and it really is one of the best events going on in New York.

With Open House New York, you can can get into places that would normally cost money (museums, concert halls, hotels) as well as sites not usually open to the public (private clubs, municipal structures, churches, schools). There are even house and office tours – including a few of the city’s architecture & design firms.

Some sites that look good this year include: tours of the Kings County Distillery, the lobby of the Chrysler Building, the Grand Lodge of Masons, The East Harlem School, the Farber Center for Radiation Oncology, Tillett Lighting Design Inc., Caples Jefferson Architects, and Moynihan Station. Of course, there are a ton more.

Check out a new neighborhood, take a guided or self-guided tour, and basically just explore NYC’s architecture and design in all five boroughs. The complete program listing is here. One of your librarians, Maggie Portis, will be volunteering for OHNY at the Nighthawk Cinema on Saturday from 10-12, so if you make that part of your itinerary, say hi! It also looks like NYSID has signed up to be a site this year, so if you haven’t visited the Graduate Center yet, it’s open on Saturday from 10-3.

Remember back when you had to report on your summer vacation activities? Well, the library doesn’t take a vacation during the summer; instead we were busily working to get things ready for when students returned. We wanted to give you a brief rundown on what we were up to while you were hopefully relaxing by the pool or getting great internship experience.

One big summer project is that we began to reclass the library collection from the Dewey Decimal classification system to the Library of Congress system. We are about half-way done with this project, and we hope to have it finished by next summer. We’re switching systems for a number of reasons, but mainly because we think browsing the collection by subject will be much easier. Finding a book may give you a little trouble since we’re using 2 systems, but just ask at the information desk if you have any problems.

If you’ve been in the Mario Buatta Materials Atelier this semester, you might have noticed that we also rearranged the materials collection. Now loose materials are towards the front of the room, and we pulled a lot of the outdated literature.

From July to the beginning of school, we’ve spent a huge chunk of time purchasing new books and databases. We’ve acquired over 200 new books, including 3 gift donations. H. Parkin Saunders generously donated books in honor of Mario Buatta, Sarah Weisberg donated a collection of art history books and exhibition catalogs, and the NYSID Class of 2011 gave the library almost 50 books on building types as their class gift. Another post is coming with more details on these generous gifts.

We’ve also increased the size of our e-book collection, and they’re now searchable in Bobcat, our online catalog. Textbooks for classes including Residential Design I and many MPS classes are now available in e-book form. To learn how to find and look at ebooks, visit our website’s ebooks page.

Finally, we’ve subscribed to two new databases, Art & Architecture Complete and CREDO Reference. Art & Architecture Complete is an article database that includes full-text articles, ebooks and citations. You can search it simultaneously with the Avery Index and Greenfile, two of our existing databases. CREDO Reference is a collection of 100 general reference ebooks on topics from healthcare to Shakespeare to tourism. If you need a regular or foreign language dictionary, a thesaurus or encyclopedia, CREDO is a great resource. CREDO also includes over a million images from the Bridgeman Art Library Archive.

As you can see, the library staff has been hard at work trying to improve your research and library experiences, so please let us know what you think. The Library wants to welcome back all the returning NYSID students and give a warm welcome to new students. Stop by the library for any of your research or information needs!

Erin from Unika Vaev stopped by the library last week to tell us about their most recent lines and bring us samples from one of them. The library is always glad to have vendors come by the library because their participation helps make the materials library useful to students.

She gave us samples of a new product called Charmed, which is a easily cleanable faux leather. You can read more about it here, but we were very impressed when Erin demonstrated cleaning off ballpoint pen and sharpie.

Unika Vaev seems to be concentrating on sustainable sourcing and materials, and one of the products Erin told us about is their new wool Life Textiles line. It seems to take green to a new level, examining the ways the sheep are raised, sheared, and fed and the wool manufacturing process. Here’s more information from their website:

LIFE Textiles by Instyle
Unika Vaev is exclusive distributor of Instyle’s LIFE (Low Impact For the Environment) Textile collection. Included in this group are products of 100% wool, designed to minimize the environmental impact over the entire life cycle including raw material selection, production, use and disposal. The program stipulates the use of clean technologies and all products are produced without the use of toxic substances such as heavy metal dyestuffs. Any additives utilized in the production process, such as detergents and lubricants, are biodegradable.

In addition, Instyle has established the EthEco wool brand, of which all the products are being transitioned to if they are not already EthEco wool. EthEco is made using wool from a breed of Merino sheep that don’t require mulesing (a surgical procedure required for most breeds of sheep due to a parasite), through Australia’s first-ever ethical wool supply agreement for the furnishings industry. EthEco wool is grown on holistically managed farms focused on animal welfare, human health and care for the environment. This attention to all aspects of the supply chain make the LIFE Textiles Collection truly unique in its manufacture.
